Le chat au café

Over the summer, I’ve been meeting up with my jam club regularly, but there’s only so much heat one can take, and I ended up one meeting being the only one showing up. I took the opportunity to record a little impromptu live concert of songs near and dear to my heart!

올 여름에 음악잼클럽을 정기적으로 만났다. 근데 더위 때문에 한번 아무도 안 왔다. 그래서 라이브를 자발적으로 해봤다! 아래 영상을 찾을 수 있다.

Not only that, but I recorded a couple “park songs,” using lyrics I added little by little over the year to riff on at jam club. I’d always wanted to write and record an album live, to be honest. I don’t have an intention to record proper “studio” versions of them, as they live and breathe in the wild, altho I did add a couple of studio embellishments. You can download it here!

비단 그뿐 아니라 새로운 노래들을 만들었고 녹음했다. 매번 잼클럽에 가는 길에 가사를 점점 만들고 있어서 그거로 썼다. 사실, 작년부터 라이브로 앨범을 하고 싶어서 드디어 해봤다. 그리고 “스튜디오” 버전을 하는 생각이 없어서 이렇게 나왔다. 위에 있는 링크나 뮤직 페이지에 다운 받을 수 있다.

Another collection of songs recorded live à la maison! There are some classics on guitar ukulele covers this time! I feel like the space I’m playing in transforms the songs subtly.

또 집에서 라이브로 연주했어요. 기타로 치는 르샤오케페의 유명한 곡을 하고 우쿨렐레로 커버쏭도 했어요. 노래 느낌은 곳의 분위기 따라 바꿀 것 같아요.

I released a sci-fi concept album last week with a couple of Fizualizer videos for fun. It’s eponymously called E.T., but I really wanted to make something inspired by ELO’s album Time. Spring is a time for new beginnings, so it’s strange that the famous cherry blossoms disappear a mere week after blooming. That’s why spring gives me a weird feeling. But despite the sudden changes, I can always count on them coming back. Last spring, I released Cherry Blossom Blues, so just like the seasons, why not revisit it again!

봄은 새로운 시작의 계절인데 벚꽃이 일주일만에 사라지는 것은 이상하다. 그래서 매해 봄 내가 기이한 느낌을 받았다. 모든 것이 빠르게 변하지만 나는 그 사라진 것이 매년 다시 돌아온다는 것을 알았다. 작년에 ‘벛꽃 블루스’ 앨범이 나와서 다시 감상합시다^^

Part 1, The Burden of “Inspiration” (“영감” 거짓)

In this section, I discuss what stops people from even considering making music, compared with writing or drawing, and how being an “observer” is the key to making a nice song.

Part 2, What’s the Point of Making Music Anyway? (노래를 왜 만들다?)

Part 2 delves into the reasons for making music and why it’s good for other kinds of creatives to consider incorporating music into their daily lives. It also includes a performance of FamilyMart.

Part 3, Writing Lyrics (가사를 붙이기)

This part is about lyrics and how we can overcome the burden of having to write “good” lyrics. There are truncated performances of Every Cat is a Kitten and a cover of Paper Ceilings’ Ocean.

가사를 붙이는 팁을 배우는 부분입니다. 생각부터 입까지 “좋은” 가사를 어떻게 만드는 방법을 알려줍니다. “Every Cat is a Kitten”이랑 “Ocean” (Paper Ceilings 커버 노래) 짧은 부분을 연주했습니다.

Part 4, Make-A-Song Workshop (같이 노래를 만들업시다!)

In the last, and most exciting, portion, all of the members of the discussion get the chance to write their own song. Timestamps for each song are included as well.

Le chat au café’s new travelogue album is out now! You can download it here. In January 2022, we took a trip to Sokcho on Korea’s eastern coast, but finding the right words and melodies proved difficult at the time. This ended up being the first album where every song had multiple different versions! It will also be the last ukulele album for some time, as I want to focus more on learning how to really play guitar. Enjoy!

Last January, I released full-album covers of of Montreal’s “Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?” and David Bowie’s “Low,” two of my favorite albums of all time.
